“No Kings” Protests Planned Amidst Immigration Debate
A third round of “No Kings” protests is being planned for this spring, with organizers expecting large gatherings across the country. The protests are aimed at opposing what organizers call authoritarian actions by President Trump.
Past rallies have drawn large crowds, and organizers say they anticipate even more people on March 28, partly because of the recent immigration situation in Minneapolis.
Ezra Levin, from the group Indivisible, told the Associated Press they expect as many as 9 million people to participate.
These protests are organized by different groups and focus on what they see as President Trump’s efforts to increase his power.
Levin stated that the protests are a response to attacks on democracy and communities.
Last year, President Trump said that the attendees of the protest did not represent the country and insisted that he is not a king.
The recent events in Minneapolis have brought renewed focus to the planned protests.
Levin said the protests aim to support Minnesota and immigrant communities while opposing what he describes as a secret police force.
President Trump has defended his immigration policies but has also acknowledged concerns regarding the recent events in Minneapolis.
The first “No Kings” rallies took place in many locations across the country. Those protests were related to federal immigration raids and the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles, where there were tense situations.
The rallies also protested a military parade in Washington, D.C. “No Kings” organizers called the parade a “coronation” that represented President Trump’s increasing power.
Some conservative politicians criticized the protests as being anti-American.
During a second round of protests in October, organizers pointed to President Trump’s immigration policies, promises to influence midterm elections, limits on press access, and actions against political opponents.
President Trump and the White House mocked the protests on social media.
Levin said that his group is focused on building lasting resistance to the Trump administration and said it is about protecting the country.
