Circle Line Cruises: Celebrating 80 Years of Scenic Journeys and Community Spirit
In the vibrant heart of New York City, a group of dedicated individuals has spent decades showcasing the beauty of the Big Apple to countless tourists. This year, Circle Line Cruises marks a remarkable 80 years of providing unforgettable boat tours around Manhattan. Many of the employees, including Captains and crew members, have devoted a significant portion of their lives to this family-run business, cherishing their roles as guides and caretakers.
Captain Kenneth Corcoran, known affectionately as “Captain Kenny,” embodies the dedication of the Circle Line family. “Our route showcases the greatest city in the world,” he proudly states, embodying the passion and enthusiasm shared by his fellow crew members. With boats departing from Pier 83 and Pier 16, Circle Line offers a variety of cruises that highlight the city’s iconic landmarks, from the Statue of Liberty to the majestic skyline.
The cultural relevance of Circle Line is rooted in its history. Many of its workers come from families who have been a part of the business for generations. Captain Kenny was introduced to the cruises through his uncle, who began working for Circle Line in 1956 after moving from Ireland. From a young age, Corcoran and his colleagues were not just employees; they were immersed in a way of life that honors family, tradition, and community.
Senior Deckhand Richard “Richie” Redmond has spent nearly 50 years on the Circle Line, initially following in his father’s footsteps. He remembers applying for the job at just 18, chuckling that he had “told them he was older” to secure his position. Richie’s fond memories include greeting tourists and celebrities alike while continuing to embrace the lessons of respect and hard work imparted by his father.
As history showed its strength, Circle Line played a vital role in major crisis moments, notably during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The crew helped transport thousands to safety, a testament to their commitment to service and bravery. Similarly, they assisted during the “Miracle on the Hudson” in 2009, where their swift actions provided critical help during another historic incident.
Mike Duffy, the Senior Port Captain, has spent over 50 years in service, beginning as a ticket seller. He has taken on many roles, including those of leadership, and recalls the day of the Hudson rescue with a deep sense of pride. “Every day is an adventure,” he shares, highlighting the unpredictable nature of working on the water and the camaraderie that comes from teamwork in times of need.
Captain Joe Volini reflects the same family-oriented spirit, having worked alongside his father and now serving as Captain himself for 26 years. His experiences on the water have shaped his perspective: “Every boat came to the shore to help out,” he recalls, emphasizing the unity within the New York community during times of crisis.
Tour Guide Chris Mason, celebrating his 40th year, has deep roots connected to Circle Line; his journey began at 16, inspired by his father, who dedicated his life to the company. Mason’s affection for the scenery—particularly the blend of new structures with historical landmarks—echoes the sentiments many locals hold dear.
As the company continues to grow, they have new faces like deckhand Latisha Conover, who joined in 2018. Although new, she has quickly embraced the spirit of Circle Line, which she describes as calming and fulfilling: “It’s different every day out on the water. I love meeting new people and seeing the excitement on their faces,” she says.
The dedication of the Circle Line team is not just about providing tours; it’s about sharing experiences, building community ties, and handing down a legacy that reflects the essence of New York City. As the crew celebrates 80 years of service, they also honor the rich stories that come with it, from family traditions to the shared joy of exploring one of the world’s greatest cities.
Navigating through turmoil, trials, and triumphs for eight decades, Circle Line Cruises stands as a shining example of resilience, family values, and the undeniable charm of New York.
