New England Weather Brings Challenges, Schools Delay Opening
Across New England, families faced a wintry mix of snow, ice, and freezing rain. Many school districts chose to delay or cancel classes. Officials said the road conditions made it unsafe for buses early in the morning.
While snow totals were low, the ice created hazardous conditions. Power outages affected a few thousand homes, mainly in Maine. Emergency crews worked to restore power as quickly as possible.
Local leaders emphasized the importance of safety. Maine Regional School Unit 21 said that student and staff well-being was their top priority. They decided to delay openings due to the icy conditions predicted for bus routes.
Highway patrols in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts reported many accidents and spinouts. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. Several airports, including Boston’s Logan International Airport, used deicing fluid to keep planes safe.
The National Weather Service has issued warnings for more winter weather. A system coming Friday night into Saturday could bring more rain, followed by snow into Sunday.
Officials asked people to be careful while driving and take extra time to get where they need to go.
