Authorities in New York have confirmed the cause and manner of death for a woman who tragically lost her life in a subway car fire earlier this month.
Debrina Kawam, a 57-year-old from New Jersey, was found to have died from severe thermal and inhalational injuries, according to the New York City Chief Medical Examiner. These types of injuries are caused by extreme heat and inhaling smoke or toxic gases, which can severely damage the body.
The medical examiner has ruled Kawam’s death a homicide. She was identified on December 31, despite her injuries making identification challenging. Investigators were able to confirm her identity through a positive fingerprint match.
Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, 33, has been arrested in connection with the incident. He faces serious charges, including murder and arson.
The tragic event occurred on December 22 while Kawam was sleeping on an F train in Brooklyn. According to police, the suspect approached her without any interaction and used a lighter to set her clothing on fire, which quickly became engulfed in flames.
Kawam is reported to have lived in Toms River, New Jersey. Zapeta-Calil has been indicted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder and arson, which could result in a life sentence if he is convicted. He has not yet entered a plea and is scheduled to appear in court on January 7.
