Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to undergo prostate surgery on Sunday, according to his office. This operation comes at a particularly challenging time, as he navigates significant crises, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza and a corruption trial.
At 75 years old, Netanyahu is part of a group of older world leaders — alongside U.S. President Joe Biden, 82, and former President Donald Trump, 78. The health and vitality of these leaders are under close observation, both domestically and internationally, due to their age and its potential impact on their governance.
Netanyahu has faced various health issues in recent years but has worked hard to project an image of a vigorous and capable leader. During his ongoing trial, he claimed to work 18-hour days despite the toll such a schedule may take on him after serving as Israel’s leader for 17 years.
His attorney, Amit Hadad, informed the court that Netanyahu will be fully sedated during the procedure and will remain hospitalized for several days. As a result, his scheduled testimony this week has been postponed, with the court agreeing to the delay.
In the interim, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, a close ally of Netanyahu, will take on the role of acting prime minister while he recovers.
Given the volatile situation in the region, Netanyahu’s health during this time of conflict is a concern for many Israelis and observers worldwide. Prostate issues are common in older men, and recovery from such surgeries typically happens quickly. Netanyahu’s office noted that he was recently treated for a urinary tract infection stemming from an enlarged prostate. The upcoming surgery is intended to address this condition.
Health complications related to prostate enlargement are not unusual for men in their 70s and 80s, according to Dr. Shay Golan, head of urological oncology at Rabin Medical Center in Israel. Speaking generally about the procedure, he emphasized that such operations are fairly routine for older patients.
Netanyahu’s health history includes other issues, such as cardiac arrhythmia, and he was hospitalized last year for dehydration. Earlier this year, he underwent surgery for a hernia.
This procedure takes place during a tumultuous period. As the leader of Israel, Netanyahu finds himself at the heart of critical global developments, including ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza and escalating tensions with Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
