Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a notable appearance at the Knesset on Tuesday for an important budget vote, just days after undergoing prostate surgery. Despite medical advice to rest following his operation, Netanyahu was in good spirits and attended the session with his personal doctor.
The prime minister, 75, recently had prostate surgery to address health issues stemming from a urinary tract infection. His office reported that the procedure went well and without complications.
In the Knesset, Netanyahu faces significant political challenges as two parties within his governing coalition are threatening to oppose the “Trapped Profits Law.” This proposed law aims to tax profits retained by corporations that have not been distributed. Up until now, these profits enjoyed tax exemptions to encourage investment back into the economy.
The proposed legislation is pivotal for passing the state budget, which is due by March 31. If the budget does not pass, it could lead to the collapse of the government and new elections.
The United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party, which holds seven seats in parliament, has announced its intention to vote against the bill as a protest against the government’s lack of progress on military service exemptions for Haredi, or ultra-Orthodox, citizens. This issue has become quite contentious in recent months, especially following a court ruling that deemed current exemptions unlawful.
Additionally, the Otzma Yehudit party, also with seven seats, is expressing its dissatisfaction. Its leader, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, is demanding a larger budget for law enforcement and emergency services. He has made it clear that he will oppose the legislation until his requests are addressed.
Netanyahu’s coalition controls 68 of the 120 seats in the Knesset, highlighting the delicate balance of power during this critical legislative period.
In the face of health challenges over the past few years, Netanyahu remains a key player in Israeli politics. His recent surgery was just one of several medical procedures he’s undergone, including hernia surgery and a pacemaker implantation, reflecting the pressures both physically and politically that he continuously navigates.
In addition to domestic issues, Netanyahu is actively involved in military operations against Iranian-backed groups across the Middle East, underlining his commitment to national security in a region fraught with challenges.
