Beijing Steps In to Help Thailand, Cambodia Settle Border Issues
Chinese diplomats are working to help Thailand and Cambodia resolve their ongoing border dispute. Talks began Sunday in China, following a new agreement between the two Southeast Asian nations to stop fighting.
For weeks, clashes along the border have caused many deaths and forced hundreds of thousands of people to leave their homes. The new agreement aims to stop the violence.
The foreign ministers from Thailand and Cambodia are meeting in China to discuss the situation. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is helping to guide the talks.
China, along with the United States, wants to see peace in the region.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the situation. He suggested that the conflict would soon end.
The meetings in China are focused on making sure the ceasefire holds and finding a lasting peace for both countries.
China has said it is ready to provide a place for Thailand and Cambodia to talk and work out their differences.
As part of the ceasefire agreement, Thailand will send back Cambodian soldiers who were captured in July. This has been a key request from Cambodia.
Cambodia has thanked China for its help in reaching the ceasefire. China is also giving millions in aid to Cambodia to help people who have been displaced by the fighting.
Thailand hopes China will not only help keep the peace but also encourage Cambodia to avoid further conflict. Thailand wants China to send a clear message that further aggression will not be tolerated.
