The family of Angelina Petra Resendiz, a Navy sailor who was recently found dead in Virginia, is seeking answers about her disappearance and demands accountability for her death.
Angelina was last seen in her barracks in Norfolk on May 29. Tragically, her body was discovered on June 9 in a wooded area near the base, according to Virginia State Police.
Authorities have reported that a Navy sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement related to Angelina’s case.
In a heartfelt statement, Angelina’s mother, Esmeralda Castle, described her daughter as a “kind and compassionate young woman.” She expressed the deep sadness the family feels, saying Angelina’s disappearance has created an emotional void. They are determined that her suffering should not be forgotten.
Castle commented that the family was not informed about Angelina’s disappearance in a timely manner, learning about it through informal channels instead of official notifications. She pointed out that while friends and colleagues were aware of her absence, the response from authorities was minimal. After her friends filed a missing persons report when Angelina’s commander did not, there was still little compassion shown by the officials.
Esmeralda Castle is calling on Congress to investigate the circumstances surrounding Angelina’s death. She emphasized the need for the Navy to improve how they communicate with families during such crises, rather than relying on media reports for updates.
“The Navy’s failures impact all families and undermine military integrity,” Castle stated. “It is crucial for Congress to reform these processes to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of all families.”
Angelina’s family and friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Esmeralda with financial needs. The fundraiser aims to assist her in searching the wooded areas around the base and potentially organizing a protest advocating for better handling of missing women cases in the military.
As of now, the Navy has not responded to requests for comments on the situation.
