A teenager in New Mexico is in trouble with the law for allegedly planning the death of his father and stepmother. The police say he wanted to get money from their inheritance.
Darren Munoz, who is 19 years old, is facing serious charges. These include two counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The charges are connected to the deaths of his father, Oscar Munoz, 58, and his stepmother, Dina, 71.
Another young man, Julio Zamora, 18, is also facing similar charges in the case.
The police were called to a house in Clovis because of a possible break-in. When they got there, they found Oscar and Dina had been shot. Munoz told the police that everything was fine, but officers found the couple in their bedroom.
According to the police, Munoz said his parents had gone to San Antonio for the weekend. He claimed he stayed home and went to bed early. He said he woke up later when he heard the garage door alarm. However, police say he lied about calling 911.
The police also learned that Munoz had been talking about his plan with others. Someone told the police that Munoz wanted to get his parents’ money and belongings.
Munoz’s girlfriend told the police that he wanted his father’s money and that Zamora agreed to kill his parents for a share of it. They believed that Oscar owned a store and that Munoz would get the money if his father died.
The plan was for Zamora to enter the house through the garage and shoot Munoz’s parents while they were in bed.
The police found messages on Munoz’s phone that showed he was talking to Zamora about when his parents would be home. Security footage also showed Munoz hiding a gun.
Zamora was arrested and had a gun with him.
The police say that the motive for the murder was money. They claim Munoz thought he would inherit a lot of money if his parents were no longer alive.
Both Munoz and Zamora are currently in jail.
