Musk Targets Government Waste with Call for Social Security Reforms
WASHINGTON – Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, has recently raised eyebrows with his remarks regarding federal benefit programs, particularly Social Security. During a discussion on Fox Business, Musk claimed that widespread fraud exists within these programs and suggested that cutting federal waste could save taxpayers between $500 billion and $700 billion.
Musk, who is currently advising former President Donald Trump, remarked, “Most of the federal spending is entitlements. That’s the big one to eliminate.” His bold assertions may send shockwaves through Washington, as politicians from both parties eye the implications of reducing government spending and scaling back social programs.
While Musk’s views represent a strong stance against government inefficiency, his claims regarding the level of fraud in entitlement programs significantly exceed estimates from official sources. For instance, the Social Security Administration’s inspector general reported that approximately $71.8 billion in improper payments occurred between 2015 and 2022. This figure represents less than 1% of total benefits distributed during that period.
Musk brought attention to significant issues within the Social Security database, stating that “20 million people who are definitely dead are marked as alive.” However, the current acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration, Lee Dudek, has dismissed the idea of widespread fraud involving payments to deceased individuals, explaining that these individuals may not necessarily be receiving benefits.

Trump, in contrast to Musk, has promised to protect Social Security from cuts, while Musk has labeled it “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time.” Additionally, he expressed concerns that federal entitlements are being used as a means of attracting and retaining illegal immigrants, which aligns with broader fears among conservatives regarding the changing dynamics of American demographics.
Musk’s interview with Larry Kudlow, a former economic advisor to Trump, highlighted his somewhat unexpected role within the administration, admitting, “Frankly, I can’t believe I’m here doing this. It’s kind of bizarre.” Despite being the world’s richest person, he is navigating the complexities of government reform while still managing his private ventures.
Many in the conservative movement are rallying behind Musk’s mission to curb government waste, with lawmakers emphasizing the public’s frustration with inefficiency. Representative Richard Hudson from North Carolina stated, “The American people are sick of the swamp. They’re sick of waste, fraud and abuse. For the first time ever, we finally have the tools to affect it.”
However, there are signs of resistance even among Republicans. Some representatives have expressed their intention to protect certain federal offices and programs, highlighting the divide within the party regarding how far to go in reducing government spending.
