Elon Musk expressed his dissatisfaction with the recent spending bill passed by House Republicans, which he refers to as “one big, beautiful bill.” During an appearance on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Musk highlighted his concerns about the bill increasing the budget deficit rather than reducing it. He mentioned that this legislation undermines the efforts of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he previously led.
The spending bill was narrowly approved in the House with a vote of 215 to 214. Notably, all Democrats and two Republicans, Thomas Massie from Kentucky and Warren Davidson from Ohio, opposed the measure. The House Freedom Caucus Chair, Andy Harris, voted “present.”
Despite Musk’s critique, former President Trump supported the bill, seeing it as a way to fulfill significant campaign promises. This includes extending tax cuts from 2017 and ensuring that tips, overtime, and Social Security are not taxed.
The proposed legislation aims to cut approximately $1.5 trillion in government spending. The need for such cuts is urgent, as the national debt has surpassed $36 trillion, with the government overspending by over $1 trillion in the 2025 fiscal year alone.
Looking ahead, the Senate now has the responsibility to deliberate and potentially pass its own version of the bill. Republican leaders are optimistic about sending the legislation to Trump’s desk by the Fourth of July.
