Clemson Advances in NCAA Tournament Thanks to Musah’s Two Goals
CLEMSON, S.C. — Wahabu Musah scored a goal in each half for his first career brace, leading the Clemson men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Providence College on Sunday evening. The match took place at Historic Riggs Field, drawing a crowd of 2,606 fans. With this win, the Tigers move forward to the third round of the 2024 NCAA men’s soccer tournament.
Clemson controlled most of the first half, sending six shots toward the goal while limiting the Friars to just one. The Tigers almost took an early lead in the 15th minute when Tyler Trimnal’s shot hit the crossbar. Just before halftime, in the 43rd minute, Misei Yoshizawa delivered a corner kick, and Musah headed it into the net for his fifth goal of the season, giving Clemson a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Clemson continued to press the attack. In the 62nd minute, Ransford Gyan had a shot that was blocked at the last moment. Musah then had another opportunity in the 64th minute, but his shot went over the net. Providence fought back with a corner kick in the 69th minute, but Patrick Donovan made a key play to punch the ball away and maintain Clemson’s lead.
Musah sealed the game in the 78th minute when he scored his second goal, taking advantage of a blocked shot from Antonio Illuminato. Clemson outshot Providence 17-2 and forced their goalkeeper to make six saves throughout the match.
The Tigers will now head to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for a rematch against the No. 8 national seed, Wake Forest, following last weekend’s ACC title game. The date and time for this upcoming game have yet to be announced.
