Eddie Murphy Reveals Hollywood’s Forgotten Friends
Eddie Murphy is offering a glimpse into a somber reality within Hollywood. In his new Netflix documentary, “Being Eddie,” the actor shares his experiences with providing financial assistance for the funerals and tombstones of fellow entertainers.
Murphy recalls covering the funeral costs for musician Rick James, comedian Redd Foxx, and William Thomas Jr., known as Buckwheat from “The Little Rascals.” He expressed surprise that some of his friends in the entertainment industry did not have enough money to cover funeral expenses.
Redd Foxx, famous for “Sanford and Son,” passed away in 1991. Murphy, who worked with Foxx, admired his effortless comedic talent. Rick James, who collaborated with Murphy on “Party All the Time,” died in 2004. William Thomas Jr. died earlier, in 1980.
Murphy has paid for multiple funerals but generally avoids attending them, with exceptions for his father and stepfather.
Looking ahead, Murphy has specific wishes for his own passing. He prefers cremation without a funeral or memorial service, hoping to spare his loved ones from unnecessary grief. He simply wants everyone to remember the good times and keep living life to the fullest.
