Rupert Murdoch’s family has finalized a significant agreement about the future of his media empire, ensuring that Fox News will continue on its current conservative trajectory. This agreement comes at a pivotal time and solidifies Lachlan Murdoch, Rupert’s chosen successor, in control of the Fox Corporation.
The deal outlines the creation of a trust that will grant Lachlan Murdoch authority over Fox Corp., which also includes his sisters, Grace and Chloe. Meanwhile, his older siblings—Prudence, Elisabeth, and James—will relinquish their claims to control. In return, they will receive stock valued at around $3.3 billion, as reported by The New York Times.
This trust is designed to remain in effect until 2050, ensuring stability and continuity for Fox News, a network that plays a crucial role in supporting conservative viewpoints and has a strong following, particularly among supporters of former President Donald Trump.
The negotiations have marked the end of what some described as a dramatic family saga, reminiscent of HBO’s “Succession,” but with real stakes for U.S. politics and media. Recently, Fox has often outperformed mainstream networks in ratings, solidifying its position as a primary source for news among conservatives.
The family disputes began when Rupert and Lachlan tried to alter an existing trust that gave equal control to Rupert’s four oldest children. Concerns arose that Prudence, Elisabeth, and James might not maintain the conservative direction of Fox, potentially pushing Lachlan out of the picture after Rupert’s passing.
In a bid to resolve these tensions, the family ultimately settled, with representatives crafting a plan that was announced just recently. The terms require Lachlan’s older siblings to divest from Fox personally and impose a long-term restriction on purchasing shares in Fox and News Corp.
The initiative, covertly dubbed “Project Family Harmony,” specifically identified James Murdoch as a problematic member of the family. The legal maneuvering involved numerous attorneys, including former Attorney General William Barr, to navigate the complexities of the case.
As we look ahead, this decision not only shapes the future of a leading media organization but also reinforces the influence of conservative viewpoints in American media for years to come.
