The Murdaugh family became known across the country because of a terrible crime. Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul.
What Happened?
On a sad day in June 2021, Maggie and Paul were shot and killed near their home in South Carolina. Alex Murdaugh called the police, saying he found them dead.
Family Troubles
Before the killings, the Murdaugh family was dealing with many problems. They had money problems, and Paul was going to court because of a boating accident that caused the death of a young woman. There were also questions about the death of their housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, in 2018.
Alex’s Arrest and Trial
Later, Alex Murdaugh was arrested for stealing money and then charged with killing Maggie and Paul. In court, he was found guilty and sent to prison for life. He also received more time in prison for his money crimes.
Buster’s Support
Throughout all of this, Alex’s son, Buster Murdaugh, stood by his father. He even spoke in court to support him. After the trial, Buster said he still believed his father was innocent.
Buster: The Older Son
Buster Murdaugh is Alex and Maggie’s oldest child, born in 1996. His younger brother, Paul, was born a few years later. Before Maggie’s death, she often shared happy family pictures on social media.
Where Was Buster?
On the night of the murders, Buster said he was not at home with his parents and brother. He was more than 200 miles away, staying with his girlfriend. He testified that his father called him that night, sounding very upset and heartbroken.
A Strange Plan
After the deaths, Alex Murdaugh was shot in the head. Police later discovered that he had asked someone to shoot him so that Buster could receive a large life insurance payment. Alex said he did this because he was worried Buster wouldn’t get the money if he killed himself.
Trouble at Law School
Buster went to law school but was kicked out for cheating. His father, Alex, tried to help him get back into school by hiring a lawyer and talking to school officials.
Sticking to His Beliefs
Buster has always said that his father did not kill his mother and brother. Even though Alex was found guilty, Buster believes there is still a killer out there. He has even said that his father has some qualities that are similar to those of a “psychopath,” but he still doesn’t believe he is a murderer.
Talking to His Dad
Even though Alex is in prison, he and Buster have spoken on the phone. In one phone call, they said “I love you” to each other.
