A shooting in Minneapolis involving officers from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has left one man dead.
The DHS stated that on Saturday, January 24th, their officers were carrying out an operation in Minneapolis targeting someone they described as an “illegal alien” wanted for a violent assault.
According to the DHS, the man, who has not been identified, approached U.S. Border Patrol agents while holding a handgun. They claim he “violently resisted” when they tried to disarm him, leading an agent to fire shots.
The man was given medical help right away but died at the scene. The DHS also said he had two magazines and no ID.
Minneapolis police shared different information at a press conference. They said the man who died was 37 years old, lived in Minneapolis, and they believed he legally owned the gun. The police chief mentioned the man’s only past interaction with law enforcement was for parking tickets.
The police also noted that video footage appeared to show several officers struggling with someone. When asked about the DHS’s version of events, the police chief said “the video speaks for itself.”
Following the shooting, a large group of people gathered near the site, resulting in confrontations between federal law enforcement and local residents.
The City of Minneapolis acknowledged the shooting and asked the public to remain calm and avoid the area while they worked to gather more information.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed strong feelings about the incident. He said he had spoken with the White House and stated that Minnesota “has had it” and called the situation “sickening.” He urged the President to end the operation and remove the federal officers from Minnesota.
