A British mother has been charged with murder following the tragic death of her 2-year-old daughter, who was discovered unresponsive in a pond near their home, according to police reports.
Alice Mackey, 42, was charged on Tuesday, March 4, after her daughter, Annabel Mackey, was reported missing from their residence on September 10, 2023. The disturbance occurred shortly after 5 p.m. local time, as confirmed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary in a news update.
Shortly after her disappearance, Annabel was found at Kingsley Pond, approximately 350 yards from their home. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but sadly passed away on the afternoon of September 11, police stated.
The suspect, who lives in the village of Oakhanger, has been taken into custody and is scheduled to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on Wednesday, March 5. Police have confirmed that Alice Mackey is the mother of the deceased child.
Detectives from the Major Crime Team are conducting an investigation into Annabel’s death and the circumstances leading up to her being found at the pond.
In a heartfelt tribute, Annabel’s father remembered her as a joyful little girl with a kind heart. He shared that she loved storytime, enjoyed playing with dogs, and delighted in singing songs and munching on sweet treats.
“Annabel brought so much happiness into our lives. She was dearly loved by her family and friends,” he stated. He encouraged everyone to carry on Annabel’s legacy of kindness and positivity, saying, “The world needs more people like Annabel to spread positivity and kindness. You are a shining star, and you will be loved forever.”
