Sherrone Moore, former head coach at the University of Michigan, is facing a series of serious challenges that have abruptly ended his time with the Wolverines.
The university stated that Moore was fired after an internal investigation revealed an “inappropriate relationship” with a member of the school’s staff. Following his dismissal, Moore was arrested and jailed. The arrest came after he allegedly broke into the staffer’s house and threatened self-harm.
But the issues surrounding Moore appear to extend beyond these incidents. Reports suggest that Moore had been experiencing friction with his coaching staff, highlighted by a heated exchange with assistant coach Wink Martindale earlier in the year.
According to reports, the disagreement between Moore and Martindale arose when Moore overheard his assistants discussing potential new players for the team. Moore reportedly became angry, accusing the staff of talking behind his back.
Martindale responded by saying that they were only trying to help him find the right players. Moore then questioned Martindale’s knowledge and abilities, leading Martindale to reply, “Yeah, I’m just the old guy.”
At this point, Moore reportedly became emotional, expressing the difficulty and pressure of being the head football coach. He allegedly slammed papers on the table during the outburst.
Moore’s legal troubles could have significant consequences for his future career. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence, making a return to coaching unlikely. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 22.
During his time as Michigan’s head coach, Moore had a record of 16 wins and 8 losses. In his first year, the team went 8-5, followed by a 7-3 record this past season. He also served a suspension for two games due to the sign-stealing investigation that involved the school.
Prosecutors claim that Moore contacted the staff member through calls and texts after their relationship ended. This prompted the staff member to report the situation to the University of Michigan and cooperate with their investigation. His subsequent firing as head coach allegedly led him to go to her home.
According to prosecutors, once inside the staff member’s home, Moore took a butter knife and scissors, threatening to harm himself. He allegedly told the staffer that she had “ruined his life” and that his “blood is on your hands”.
Moore has pleaded not guilty during his court appearance earlier this month.
