PORT ROYAL, S.C. — A unique event is set to take place in Port Royal, South Carolina, inspired by a recent incident where 43 monkeys escaped from a research facility in Yemassee. On Sunday at 2 p.m., Shellring Ale Works, in partnership with Dustbone Apparel and Grounded Running, will host a Lab Monkey Freedom Run.
The event will kick off and conclude at Shellring Ale Works located at 1111 11th Street. This run also celebrates the launch of a new banana imperial stout named "Escape to Morgan Island."
The Lab Monkey Freedom Run is open to everyone, including walkers, joggers, competitive runners, and those pushing strollers. Participants are encouraged to come dressed as either a lab technician or a monkey. However, attendees are advised not to bring bicycles or dogs.
Registration will begin at noon for a fee of $20, which includes a commemorative race t-shirt, a complimentary beer from Shellring, and live music performances both before and after the race. Upon check-in, runners will receive a ticket for their t-shirt and a token for their beer. Additionally, the first 50 children present will enjoy free face painting to look like monkeys.
All funds raised during the event will go to "Born Free USA," a nonprofit organization focused on finding homes for monkeys. A playful "local legend monkey" will be on the course, creating fun distractions; any runners who cross the finish line ahead of the monkey will be rewarded with a prize.
Participants are advised to park in the field behind the brewery once the main parking lot is full. The race circuit is around 1.7 miles, and as of Thursday, registration has already sold out.
Whether you’re looking to run or simply enjoy the festivities, the Lab Monkey Freedom Run promises a memorable day for all!
