Florida Mom Faces Felony Charges After Child Brings Gun to School
A mother in Florida has been charged after allegedly sending her young child to school with a loaded gun in their backpack.
The incident took place on August 13 at Coppergate Elementary School in Middleburg. School officials discovered the firearm when the child, unaware it was in their bag, informed their teacher. The teacher quickly alerted the school staff, who contacted the local sheriff’s office.
Following the report, Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook reassured the community, stating, “All children are safe,” in an early morning Facebook post. At that time, the school was placed under a “secure status,” which allowed classes to continue while preventing anyone from entering or exiting the premises. The gun was confiscated by deputies shortly after.
Investigators soon identified the child’s mother, Sierra Bronner. According to the sheriff’s office, they learned that Bronner had placed the firearm in the backpack and instructed her child to return it to their father. The child’s father was unaware that the gun was in the bag when he dropped them off at school.
Bronner, 39, was arrested and charged with child neglect and providing a firearm to a minor, both of which are serious felonies. The Florida Department of Children and Families has also been notified regarding the situation.
Sheriff Cook emphasized the importance of parental awareness, advising parents to check what their children are taking to school. She expressed gratitude for the collaboration with the school district and commended the authorities for their quick response in ensuring student safety.
This event highlights the critical need for parents to have open conversations with their children about safety and appropriate items for school.
