Mother Charged in Infant’s Death After Night of Drinking
A mother in Oklahoma is facing serious charges after the tragic death of her newborn son. Brennan Spencer, 33, has been arrested and is charged with second-degree murder following the incident involving her infant son, RK.
The heartbreaking situation unfolded after Spencer reportedly went to sleep with her twin babies after a night of drinking. Investigators state that she woke up to find her son unresponsive at her feet, while her daughter, LK, was being held in her arms.
According to police reports, Spencer and the father of the twins, James Kelson, had consumed a significant amount of alcohol the night before. Kelson mentioned to officers that they shared a 12-pack of White Claw seltzers before he went to bed around midnight.
Spencer and the twins were put to bed at the same time, but by 6:45 a.m., Kelson discovered that the family was no longer in the bedroom. When he went to check on them, he found Spencer on the couch holding their daughter, while their son lay lifeless on the floor.
In her statement to the police, Spencer admitted to being “probably really drunk” when she went to sleep. She explained that she had gone out to buy more alcohol around midnight and passed out on the couch after returning home.
Surveillance footage showed her at a nearby store shortly after midnight, purchasing four cans of alcoholic beverages. The police also found evidence of the drinks consumed that night in the house.
The medical examiner concluded that RK’s death was likely due to “asphyxia because of an unsafe sleep environment.” The report indicated that Spencer’s intoxication created a dangerous situation for the babies while she was supposed to be caring for them.
On June 26, the case was referred to the Cleveland County District Attorney, and an arrest warrant was issued on July 1. Spencer now remains in custody with bail set at $500,000 and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on August 5. Meanwhile, Kelson has publicly supported her and is seeking legal assistance following this tragic event.
