A physics professor from MIT, Nuno F.G. Loureiro, has died after being shot in his home.
Police found Loureiro, 47, with gunshot wounds at his house in Brookline, Massachusetts, on December 15th. He was taken to the hospital but passed away a few hours later. The police are looking into his death as a homicide. No suspects have been named yet.
Loureiro was a well-respected professor at MIT. He taught nuclear science, engineering, and physics. He was also in charge of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center. He was known for his work with plasma, which is a very hot, electrically charged gas.
Many people at MIT are sad about Loureiro’s death. They remember him as a smart and caring person. Students held a candlelight vigil outside his home to honor him.
Loureiro was born in Portugal and studied physics in Lisbon and London. He came to MIT in 2016 and became a professor. He said he liked teaching and working with the smart people at MIT.
