A federal judge has ordered the release of a 5-year-old boy and his father from a Texas detention center following their detainment by immigration officials in Minnesota. The judge voiced strong concerns about the handling of the case.
Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, were taken into custody in a Minneapolis suburb last month and transported to a facility in Texas.
The government maintains that Arias entered the U.S. illegally in 2024. However, the family’s legal team asserts that he has a pending asylum claim that grants him the right to remain in the country while it is being processed.
The incident has sparked debate, particularly regarding the tactics used by immigration officers during the arrest. Some claim the boy was used to lure his mother outside, while the Department of Homeland Security denies this.
Concerns have also been raised about conditions at the detention center, with reports of inadequate food and medical care. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges in balancing border security with humanitarian considerations.
