Honoring a Local Hero: The Tragic Loss of the Hortmans and Their Dog
ST. PAUL, Minn. — In a heartbreaking event that has captured the community’s attention, Gilbert, a golden retriever, was with Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband when tragedy struck. A gunman took their lives on June 14, and Gilbert suffered severe injuries during the attack. Sadly, he was later put to sleep to end his suffering.
In a rare tribute, Gilbert became the first dog to lay in state at the Minnesota Capitol as the Hortmans received respect from hundreds of mourners. This honor typically reserved for high-profile figures, like vice presidents and governors, was extended to this beloved pet, highlighting the deep bond families share with their animals.
On Friday, gathered mourners paid their respects in the rotunda, where two pedestals held memorial arrangements: one for flowers and another for Gilbert’s gold urn. Outside the House chamber, a box of Milk-Bone biscuits with a note reading “For the best boy, Gilbert” served as a touching tribute to the dog who brought joy to many.
Kacy Deschene, attending from Champlin, expressed the collective grief felt by many: “We’ve all had family and pets; it’s tragic to have the whole family lost in a moment like that.”
Following the tragic news, Gilbert received an outpouring of love from the community, further cementing his status as part of the family. The accused shooter, Vance Boelter, also targeted another prominent Democratic senator and his wife, leading to fears for other lawmakers’ safety. Boelter’s actions shook the community to its core.
After the incident, Gilbert’s injuries led to difficult decisions for the surviving family members. Despite his circumstances, remember Gilbert as a sweet and gentle soul, deeply loved by those around him.
Adding to the heartwarming stories, the Hortmans had fostered service dogs through Helping Paws Inc. One of these dogs, Minnie, has already moved on to assist a veteran, thanks to their nurturing efforts.
In light of the devastating loss, volunteers from Helping Paws provided some comfort to the mourners with cheerful canines, reminding everyone that love, support, and community can uplift even in the darkest times.
