A woman in Minneapolis, named Renee Nicole Good, was killed by an agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Her mother, Donna Ganger, said that she learned about her daughter’s death on Wednesday morning. She described Renee as a very kind, caring, loving, and forgiving person who always looked after others.
The shooting happened during an immigration operation in Minneapolis. According to reports, a group of people were blocking the ICE agents.
City Council member Jason Chavez said that Renee was a U.S. citizen who was simply watching out for her immigrant neighbors.
The incident took place shortly after ICE began large-scale immigration raids in the city. These raids followed strong statements from then President Donald Trump about immigrants.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed his anger, stating that the agent used power carelessly, resulting in someone’s death. He told the federal agency to leave Minneapolis, saying they were not wanted and were making the city less safe.
Reports indicate that Renee was shot in the head and died at a local hospital.
Emily Heller, a witness, said she saw agents trying to open Renee’s car door. She believes Renee got scared and tried to drive away. As she was moving forward, an ICE agent stepped in front of the car and shot her.
Heller described the event as horrific and terrifying.
Following the shooting, a Homeland Security spokesperson claimed that Renee used her car as a weapon, trying to run over the officers. They said the ICE agent fired his weapon because he feared for his life and the safety of others.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced that he had put the state’s National Guard on alert. He also called for people to protest peacefully, saying it was their duty to speak out against what happened.
