Former Michigan quarterback Alex Orji is set to continue his college football career at UNLV after deciding to transfer. Orji, who has two years of eligibility remaining, brings with him the potential of being a dynamic dual-threat quarterback, known for his ability to make plays both in the air and on the ground.
During his time at Michigan, Orji faced challenges in securing a starting position. He played behind established quarterbacks in a system that still bore the marks of the previous era led by J.J. McCarthy. Despite his talents, he could not find a consistent role within the Wolverines’ offense.
In December, Orji made the decision to enter the transfer portal, a move that was soon validated by his announcement to join UNLV’s football program. His official transfer was confirmed just recently.
In the past season with Michigan, Orji participated in ten games but only earned three starts. His statistics reflect the limited opportunities he had on the field. He rushed 57 times for 269 yards and found the end zone once. Through the air, Orji threw for 148 yards, logged three touchdown passes, but maintained a completion percentage of 52.3%. This limited game time left him yearning for a fresh start, and the chance to establish himself as a pivotal player.
Orji often played as a backup to Davis Warren, a senior who contributed significantly to the team’s passing game with 1,126 yards, despite facing challenges with nine interceptions over eight games. Another senior, Jack Tuttle, faced his own setbacks and was forced to medically retire from football due to concussions, which only complicated matters for Orji’s chances to be a starter at Michigan.
In contrast, UNLV has recently wrapped up a fruitful 11-3 season, thanks in large part to Hajj-Malik Williams, who utilized his final eligibility year and has since moved on. This leaves an opening for Orji to step into a starting role and take charge of the Rebs’ offense. It’s an exciting period for UNLV as they also welcome other new transfers to various positions, aiming to bolster their team ahead of the next season.
Orji’s arrival at UNLV is anticipated to be a significant addition to the team. His unique skill set as a dual-threat quarterback could not only enhance the Rebels’ gameplay but also offer him the opportunity he has been looking for—to be a central figure in a college football program and build on his potential.
With two years to play, he will have the chance to refine his skills and perhaps emerge as a standout player. Fans and analysts alike will be keen to see how he develops in this new environment and if he can bring his best performances to the field. The future looks promising for Alex Orji, and the coming season could be a pivotal moment in his football journey. As he embarks on this new chapter, both he and the UNLV football program are poised for growth and success in the years ahead.
