A strong earthquake struck southern and central Mexico on Friday, causing alarm and disruption. The quake, with a magnitude of 6.5, was centered near San Marcos in Guerrero state. Sadly, at least two deaths have been reported as a result of the disaster.
President Claudia Sheinbaum’s press conference was interrupted as seismic alarms sounded across the region.
Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado confirmed that a 50-year-old woman tragically died when her home collapsed. A hospital in Chilpancingo sustained significant damage, requiring the evacuation of patients.
In Mexico City and Acapulco, residents and tourists evacuated buildings as the ground shook. One person in Mexico City died after a medical emergency during the evacuation.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake’s depth at 21.7 miles. Aftershocks continue to be felt in the region, and authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage. Communications to some areas southeast of Acapulco were temporarily cut off.
