Mets’ Playoff Hopes Dashed After Disappointing Season Finish
Miami, FL – The New York Mets’ 2025 season came to a disappointing end on Sunday, as they were eliminated from playoff contention with a 4-0 loss to the Miami Marlins. The Marlins scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning, shutting down the Mets’ offense for the remainder of the game.
This loss, combined with other results, meant the Cincinnati Reds clinched a playoff spot instead. The Mets, who began the season with high expectations, finished with a regular season record of 83-79.
“I take responsibility,” said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza after the game. “I’m the manager. It starts with me. I’ve got to take a long look here, how I need to get better.”
The Mets entered the 2025 season with one of the highest payrolls in Major League Baseball. A significant investment was the acquisition of star player Juan Soto, who joined the team on a long-term deal. While the team started strong, their performance declined as the season progressed.
After a promising start that saw them with a 45-24 record on June 12th, the Mets struggled in the latter half of the season, going 38-55.
The team faced a particularly tough stretch with an eight-game losing streak. Although they managed to bounce back briefly, they couldn’t maintain the momentum needed to secure a playoff berth.
The series against the Marlins was crucial, but the Mets only managed to win one of the three games. Their struggles continued throughout August and September, with losing records in both months.
This marks another year of disappointment for Mets fans, as the team has now missed the postseason in seven of the last nine years. The team will now be looking to address the issues that led to their late-season collapse and work towards a more successful 2026 campaign.
