Lionel Messi is likely to continue his soccer journey with Inter Miami, as both sides are reportedly close to finalizing a new contract. This agreement would keep the star player in Miami for several more years.
Sources say that while a few details still need to be worked out, the deal is expected to be completed soon. After that, it will be sent to Major League Soccer (MLS) for final approval.
There had been speculation about Messi potentially joining other teams, with Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli reportedly showing strong interest. The Saudi Arabian government had also previously tried to recruit Messi to their domestic league with a very attractive offer when he initially departed Paris Saint-Germain. However, he ultimately chose to join Inter Miami.
Messi’s arrival in Miami in 2023 has been marked by both successes and setbacks. Inter Miami quickly achieved a significant victory by winning the Leagues Cup in 2023, marking their first-ever title. In 2024, the team set an MLS record for points earned and secured the Supporters’ Shield. However, their journey was cut short in the MLS playoffs with a loss to Atlanta United in the first round.
Currently, Inter Miami holds sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Importantly, they have played three fewer games than the teams ahead of them.
Since joining Inter Miami, Messi has played in 46 matches, starting in 38 of them. During this time, he has scored 41 goals and provided 22 assists. The club has made significant changes to support him, including hiring two head coaches with whom he has prior connections. Additionally, former Barcelona teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suárez have joined the team. There are also nine other players from Argentina currently on the roster.
While Messi’s future with Inter Miami appears to be nearing a resolution, he still faces a decision regarding his involvement with the Argentina national team and the upcoming World Cup next year.
