In a recent interview, Drake Maye, the quarterback for the Patriots, highlighted the team’s accomplishments over his own individual success. Despite a record-breaking season, Maye focused on the collective achievements of the team.
“Yeah, I think 14 wins. That’s the first thing that comes to mind,” Maye told reporters, referring to the team’s impressive win record. He also pointed out the team’s undefeated streak on the road, noting, “Fourteen wins and probably 8-0 on the road. That’s probably the thing I’m the most proud of is going on the road eight times and coming out victorious in all of them. So that was pretty cool.”
Maye also emphasized the inclusive nature of the Patriots’ offense. “From there, I think just the ability to get a lot of people involved,” Maye continued. “I think that’s one of the best things about our offense. We get a lot of people involved. A lot of people catch and pass, a lot of people scoring touchdowns, a lot of guys making plays at different parts in the game, and I think that’s one of the toughest things about ways to defend us. So that’s probably what I’m most proud of.”
This season, Maye has achieved a remarkable feat, becoming only the second quarterback in history to pass for over 4,000 yards and score 30 or more touchdowns with a completion percentage of at least 72 percent. What’s even more impressive is that, at 23 years old, he is the youngest player to ever reach this milestone.
In addition to these accomplishments, Maye set a new franchise record with a completion percentage of 72 percent. This figure ranks as the sixth-highest in the history of the National Football League.
Reflecting on the team’s turnaround after two consecutive seasons with only four wins each, Maye acknowledged his role as just one part of the larger picture. He credited the team’s success to a combination of factors, starting with the leadership at the top.
“Yeah, I think it starts from the top down,” Maye said. “I think from Kraft to them deciding to hire Coach Vrabel to kind of bringing him in here and really just buying into what he was coaching us hard and coaching us to believe in. I think from there, it’s us players — got some new players in here, some new faces. I think that the organization has really gelled well together. We enjoy being around these guys.”
Looking ahead, Maye and the Patriots are gearing up for the postseason. After securing the second seed in the AFC, they are preparing to face the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium.
