Ghislaine Maxwell is asking the Supreme Court to overturn her conviction for sex trafficking. She is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence following her conviction in 2021. Maxwell was a close associate of Jeffrey Epstein, who had a long history of criminal activities.
Maxwell’s lawyers argue that she should have been given immunity due to a controversial deal Epstein made with federal prosecutors in 2008. They claim that this agreement protects her from any charges related to Epstein’s actions.
In that deal, Epstein pleaded guilty to state prostitution charges and served just over a year in prison. In return, federal prosecutors agreed to drop other charges against him, along with a promise not to pursue criminal charges against any potential co-conspirators.
Maxwell’s legal team insists that she falls under this agreement and highlighted that the core issue of the case is the promise made by the government, not just Epstein’s actions.
Maxwell was convicted on sex trafficking charges in December 2021. Her request to have her conviction overturned was previously denied by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, prompting her to take the matter to the Supreme Court.
