A young elephant seal made a surprising appearance in the coastal town of Gordon’s Bay, South Africa, on Tuesday morning. The hefty two-ton seal wandered through the suburban streets, catching the attention of local residents who couldn’t believe their eyes.
Witnesses described how the seal, thought to be lost, meandered past homes and even dared to rest his massive head on the hoods of parked cars. Locals, amused by the unusual sight, recorded videos, with one woman playfully asking the seal how he ended up so far from home.
Concerned for the seal’s safety, local authorities—including the police and a security company—worked to contain the situation. They surrounded the seal with patrol cars, but the adventurous animal managed to slip away and continue on his path, eventually stopping near a shopping mall.
As the seal wandered further from the ocean, animal welfare officials expressed concern that he might get exhausted or dehydrated without access to water. Weighing around 4,400 pounds, he is relatively small for his species, as adult elephant seals can reach even larger sizes.
Eventually, a team of marine wildlife experts and a veterinarian intervened. They sedated the seal and carefully transported him back to a nearby bay where he could safely return to the water. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA later shared a video on social media, showing the seal happily scuttling down a beach and back toward the ocean. The playful caption read, “Sea you later,” highlighting the lighthearted spirit of the day.
