A new bill aimed at tackling the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) troubling practice of forced organ harvesting has passed with notable support, only facing a single dissenting vote in the House on Wednesday.
Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, stood out as the only lawmaker who opposed the Stop Forced Organ Harvesting Act, which received overwhelming backing of 406-1. Massie expressed concerns about the U.S. intervening in another nation’s affairs, stating, “It’s just another example of us trying to stick our nose in another country’s business and write their laws.” He emphasized that, ultimately, those countries will act according to their own interests.
Known as a conservative libertarian, Massie frequently votes against House measures that attempt to influence foreign nations. His resistance to the bill is particularly notable since he has been critical of Speaker Mike Johnson and former President Donald Trump in various situations.
The legislation, initiated by Rep. Chris Smith from New Jersey, aims to empower the Secretary of State to deny U.S. passports and visitor visas to individuals linked to organ trafficking. The bill also proposes sanctions on those involved in this horrific industry.
This issue of forced organ harvesting has drawn significant attention, with U.S. lawmakers accusing China of targeting its ideological opponents, including practitioners of Falun Gong and Uyghur Muslims.
