Mason Rudolph Remains Focused Amid Quarterback Uncertainty in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH — Mason Rudolph, a quarterback in the NFL for over five years, has learned to read the game and anticipate pressure on the field. However, the pressure he feels lately isn’t from defenders; it’s the buzz surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers’ interest in legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
During the first session of voluntary offseason workouts, Rudolph faced questions about Rodgers’ potential arrival. He seemed unfazed, noting it’s quite standard for the NFL to have noise around player movements. "I’ve dealt with that for a long time," he said. "All I can do is focus on being my best and helping the team improve this spring."
Rudolph made his return to Pittsburgh this March on a two-year deal after spending a challenging season with the Tennessee Titans. He was one of only two quarterbacks on the Steelers’ roster at the time, which left some fans wondering about the team’s direction after Justin Fields left for the New York Jets.
In the meantime, the Steelers have also drafted promising quarterback Will Howard, leaving room for speculation about Rodgers, who visited the team but has not yet made a decision on joining them. His presence lingers over the team as they continue to prepare for the upcoming season, especially after a disappointing end to last year.
Pittsburgh’s roster has changed quite a bit, including the acquisition of Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf, who has been around the facility regularly. However, until Rodgers makes his intentions clear, the focus will remain on him.
For Rudolph, the situation is familiar. Drafted by the Steelers in 2018, he has faced ups and downs, from serving as a backup to getting his shot at leading the team. Despite challenges and being passed over in favor of other quarterbacks, Rudolph stepped up last season when he was called upon, showcasing his skills and helping lead the Steelers to the playoffs.
When approached by the Steelers again for a deal after the free agency opened, he quickly agreed, expressing his attachment to the team and the city. "It’s good to be wanted," he said, emphasizing the special bond he feels with Pittsburgh.
Though the offseason activities are voluntary, Rudolph has been eager to participate fully. He’s dedicated to reconnecting with teammates and picking up the offensive playbook with the help of players like tight end Pat Freiermuth.
Coach Mike Tomlin has not set a deadline regarding Rodgers’ decision, but he hopes to solidify the roster before training camp begins in late July. For Rudolph, this is a time to seize every opportunity, whether he ends up as a placeholder or the starting quarterback.
“It feels great to be back with friends and familiar faces,” Rudolph said. "Who wouldn’t want to be a part of this team and this offense?"
As he continues to prepare, the Steelers remain in a state of anticipation, waiting to see how these quarterback dynamics unfold in the coming months.
