Paparazzo, a contestant on “The Masked Singer,” was recently unmasked and revealed to be Matthew Lawrence, known for his role in “Boy Meets World.” During his time on the show, he sang the song “Unpretty” by TLC, but not without first seeking permission from his girlfriend, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, and fellow TLC member Tionne Watkins.
In the April 16 episode, the remaining six competitors took to the stage, sharing their singing talents and answering questions from the panel, which included celebrities like Robin Thicke and Jenny McCarthy. Lawrence’s performance surprised many, especially when he revealed he had to get clearance for his song choice, given that it was originally penned by Watkins.
Lawrence explained that he approached them before taking the stage. “I had to ask them and get their approval. Tionne had to give me personal and Fox approval,” he shared. Thankfully, both women were supportive of his decision to perform the song, with Chilli even offering him some singing tips.
When Lawrence first mentioned “Unpretty” as a favorite song during the show’s questioning, he never expected it to be selected for his performance. Nevertheless, he took the plunge, motivated by a desire to overcome his fear of singing in public. He acknowledged that his journey on the show was about facing that anxiety and seizing opportunities.
Now feeling inspired, Lawrence is open to continuing his singing career. “I wish I hadn’t allowed fear to dictate my singing life as much,” he admitted. “I’m definitely open to more singing opportunities now.”
“The Masked Singer” airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. Lawrence’s experience highlights the courage it takes to pursue passions and the importance of support from loved ones.
