Mariah Carey Shines at 2025 MTV Video Music Awards
Mariah Carey had a spectacular night at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on September 7. This year marked her return to the VMAs after 20 years, where she was honored with the coveted Video Vanguard Award. The award was presented to her by Ariana Grande, shortly after Carey won her first Moon Person for Best R&B with her music video “Type Dangerous.”
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, the 56-year-old icon expressed gratitude to MTV and humorously asked Grande, “What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?” She reflected on memorable moments from her past appearances, including when she helped honor LL Cool J with his Vanguard Award and an unforgettable opening with Whitney Houston in matching dresses.
Carey shared how music videos play a significant role in her creative expression. “Music videos are my way of life,” she said. “They visualize the drama and fantasy of music, sometimes allowing me to do things I’d never do in real life.”
During the ceremony, Carey delighted fans with a medley of her greatest hits, including “Honey,” “Obsessed,” and “We Belong Together.” She started in a luxurious gold robe and transitioned into a dazzling gold bodysuit, showcasing her iconic style.
Having debuted at the VMAs in 1991 with “Emotions,” Carey has had a long and influential career. Earlier in her career, she opened the show in 1998 alongside Whitney Houston and was a prominent figure at the awards.
In addition to receiving the Video Vanguard Award, Carey also took home the Best R&B award for her song “Type Dangerous,” which is part of her upcoming album, Here for It All, set to release on September 26.
The 2025 MTV VMAs aired live from UBS Arena in New York and were available on CBS and MTV, marking a proud moment for Carey and her enduring legacy in music.
