Missouri Man Accused of Exploiting Veteran Uncle
A Missouri man is facing serious charges after allegedly locking his uncle, a U.S. Army veteran with quadriplegia, in a garage and hiding his death for years. Brian Ditch, 44, is accused of stealing over $650,000 in disability benefits intended for his uncle.
Ditch was indicted earlier this week on multiple charges, including wire fraud and identity theft. Prosecutors say he began fraudulently claiming his uncle’s benefits in 2008 when he was made responsible for his care.
During the time his uncle lived with him, Ditch allegedly kept him confined and unable to care for himself, often preventing him from accessing basic needs. While doing so, Ditch reportedly collected nearly $9,600 monthly from Veterans Affairs.
After his uncle passed away in 2019, Ditch allegedly misled family members by claiming he had moved him to a nursing home while continuing to pocket his benefits. Authorities found the uncle’s body in a trash can, partially frozen, with firearms present that Ditch, as a felon, should not have owned.
Ditch’s cousin, Angie Crowder, expressed deep concern about the family’s lack of knowledge regarding her uncle’s condition and whereabouts. When relatives inquired about him, they were informed by detectives about the grim discovery.
Investigators revealed that Ditch used the stolen benefits to fund lavish vacations and purchase exotic pets, illustrating a significant abuse of trust. The authorities have stated their commitment to pursuing justice for exploited veterans. Ditch appeared in court recently, where he pleaded not guilty.
This disturbing case highlights a severe lack of regard for a vulnerable family member, prompting a strong response from law enforcement aimed at preventing such exploitation in the future.
