A New York City mayoral candidate is getting attention after a video surfaced of him talking about how he felt he was treated unfairly after the terrorist attacks on September 11th.
Zohran Mamdani, who is running for mayor, spoke to voters in 2020 about his experiences. He said that after 9/11, a teacher took him and another student out of class and warned them they might be picked on because of the attacks.
He also said that when he was 15, he was stopped at an airport with his family and questioned by security about whether he had been to a terrorist training camp.
Mamdani said that New York City makes people feel like they can belong, but that there were times when he was reminded that this wasn’t always true for everyone.
Some people are criticizing Mamdani for these comments, with one activist saying he is using the 9/11 attacks to get votes.
This comes after Mamdani was also criticized for saying his aunt stopped riding the subway after 9/11 because she felt unsafe.
JD Vance, a well-known political figure, said that Mamdani seems to think the real victims of 9/11 were people who “got some (allegedly) bad looks.”
Mamdani’s campaign has been contacted for their side of the story.
