New York Mayor-Elect Stands by Criticism of President After White House Meeting
WASHINGTON – New York City’s Mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, reaffirmed his past criticisms of President Trump in a recent interview, despite a seemingly positive meeting between the two.
Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, and the Republican president have publicly disagreed in the past. Following Mamdani’s election, President Trump referred to him using strong language on social media. Mamdani, in turn, has accused the President of attacking democracy. However, their recent meeting at the White House concluded with both men expressing optimism and shared goals.
During a “Meet the Press” interview, Mamdani was questioned about his previous statements. He stated that his views remained unchanged.
“Everything that I’ve said in the past, I continue to believe,” Mamdani said, emphasizing the importance of honesty in politics. He explained that he attended the meeting to work for the benefit of New Yorkers.
President Trump downplayed Mamdani’s past criticisms during their meeting. When a reporter questioned Mamdani about calling President Trump a fascist, the President interjected, seemingly dismissing the comment.
Kevin Hassett, a White House advisor, stated that the President is willing to collaborate with anyone focused on improving the lives of Americans.
“We’re at times disagreeing about policies,” Hassett said, “but I think that the objective of making life better for everybody is something that a lot of people share on the Democratic and Republican side.”
Despite their political differences, the meeting could be seen as beneficial for both men. Mamdani had the opportunity to meet with the President, while President Trump was able to discuss important issues.
