A New York City mayoral candidate is facing criticism after a video surfaced of him comparing the New York Police Department (NYPD) to the Israeli military.
Zohran Mamdani, a socialist candidate, made the comments at a conference in 2023. He stated that the “boot of the NYPD” is “laced by the IDF,” suggesting a connection between the two.
These remarks have drawn strong reactions, especially because Mamdani has been critical of law enforcement in the past. He has previously said the NYPD should have its funding cut and is a danger to the public. He later apologized for these statements.
When asked about the NYPD’s liaison office in Israel, Mamdani said his main concern was with the police in New York City, not overseas.
Many people have taken to social media to express their disapproval of Mamdani’s comments. Some have called his remarks anti-Semitic, while others see them as divisive and dangerous.
In addition to his controversial statements, Mamdani’s plans for policing in New York City have also been questioned. He has suggested that social workers and other non-police personnel should respond to certain 911 calls. He believes this would reduce the workload for police officers and improve their retention rates.
Critics argue that this plan could put people in danger if non-law enforcement are sent to potentially violent situations. One former NYPD sergeant called the idea “the worst” he had ever heard, raising concerns about what would happen if a dispatcher made a mistake and someone was harmed.
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has also criticized Mamdani, calling him “divisive” and pointing out his past statements about the NYPD being racist. Cuomo emphasized the importance of unity in a city like New York and said leaders should work to bring people together, not drive them apart.
