AC Milan Faces Challenge in Extending Goalkeeper Maignan’s Contract
AC Milan is working to extend the contract of their star goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, but faces a potential challenge as his current deal expires in June 2026. The club is eager to avoid a situation similar to 2021, when they lost Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer.
Talks between Milan and Maignan’s representatives are expected to continue in the coming days. However, with January approaching, Maignan will soon be eligible to negotiate with other clubs, potentially leading to a free transfer at the end of the season if a new agreement with Milan isn’t reached.
Milan brought in Maignan from Lille before Donnarumma’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain, and he quickly established himself as a key player for the team.
Extending Maignan’s contract is a high priority for Milan. The club is aware of interest from other clubs, particularly those in the English Premier League, who may be able to offer more financially attractive terms. Despite this, Milan hopes to reach an agreement with the 30-year-old goalkeeper in the near future.
Even Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is reportedly involved in efforts to persuade Maignan to commit his future to the club.
Milan’s sporting director, Igli Tare, recently stated that the club will resume negotiations with Maignan soon. He also said Maignan is content at San Siro, Milan’s home stadium. However, Tare denied reports that Maignan has demanded a new contract with a salary of €8 million per year.
“We’ve never discussed the figures, I’ve never heard these numbers,” Tare said. “It’s easy to talk about Mike because he’s a fantastic lad, he’s a leader and a man of the group.”
Tare added, “We are happy with him, he likes to stay at Milan, and Milan wants to extend [his contract]. Today we have a game we want to win, then we’ll have time to discuss the matter.”
The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Milan can secure Maignan’s long-term future at the club.
