CLEVELAND — In a surprising turn of events, the Orlando Magic defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 108-103 on Sunday, snapping the Cavaliers’ impressive 16-game winning streak. This marked the first loss for Cleveland since early February, as they struggled to finish strong against a determined Magic team.
The Cavaliers, who had been leading the Eastern Conference, faced a tough challenge in the closing minutes of the game. Despite having some scoring opportunities, they missed five shots, including three from their star player, Donovan Mitchell. With just under a minute left, Paolo Banchero hit a crucial jumper that put Orlando ahead 104-103. Following a missed three-pointer from Cleveland’s De’Andre Hunter, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope sealed the game with two free throws, stretching Orlando’s lead to three points.
Banchero, despite his struggles shooting the ball at 6 of 22, contributed significantly with 11 rebounds and seven assists. Wendell Carter Jr. also had a strong performance, adding 16 points and collecting 14 rebounds for the Magic.
Mitchell, who had recently returned from a groin injury, scored 23 points for Cleveland. Jarrett Allen also made an impact with 20 points and 12 rebounds. However, the team missed the presence of All-Star Evan Mobley, who sat out due to a foot injury.
The Magic, though not the same team that pushed Cleveland to seven games in last year’s playoffs due to injuries to key players like Mo Wagner and Jalen Suggs, demonstrated resilience by handing Cleveland just their second loss in 22 games. This game highlighted that the Cavaliers need to improve their late-game execution, especially as the playoffs approach.
A turning point came late in the third quarter when the Cavaliers, leading by eight, committed three turnovers in a mere 27 seconds. This opened the door for the Magic, who capitalized with ten consecutive points.
Looking ahead, the Magic will host the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, while the Cavaliers will embark on a five-game road trip starting with a matchup against the Clippers on Tuesday.
