Luigi Mangione Faces Murder Charges in New York
Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is likely to give up his right to a hearing that would decide whether he should be sent to New York. He may appear in a New York court as soon as Thursday.
Mangione’s attorneys informed various news outlets that he plans to stop contesting the extradition to New York. However, his New York lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, and Pennsylvania lawyer, Thomas Dickey, did not respond to requests for comments.
In New York, Mangione is charged with first-degree murder, a serious charge that could result in a life sentence without parole if he is found guilty. The grand jury indictment also claims that he intended to commit an act of terrorism.
By waiving his extradition rights, Mangione could be quickly taken to New York for his hearing in front of a judge. He was arrested last week in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and is currently held there on unrelated charges involving a ghost gun and fake IDs that were found with him at a McDonald’s during his arrest.
Mangione is expected to have a preliminary hearing for his Pennsylvania charges early Thursday morning, followed by the extradition hearing, which he reportedly intends to waive. However, as of Wednesday afternoon, the waiver had not yet been submitted to the courthouse in Blair County.
