A Young Entrepreneur’s Tribute to Veterans through Burgers
A Long Island teen is making headlines for his heartwarming initiative that combines delicious food with a meaningful mission. Will Burrell, an 18-year-old high school senior, has launched “Will’s Smashburgers,” a business where veterans can eat for free, and a portion of the profits is donated to support active military members and their families.
Will’s inspiration stems from his experiences at a military-style boot camp in Vermont, which opened his eyes to the sacrifices made by those in the armed forces. “These veterans are risking their lives for our freedom,” he says, highlighting why he feels compelled to give back. His burger stand is set up in Mattituck, located within Center Cuts Gourmet Butcher shop, where he prepares food with care and dedication.
He has even garnered support from New York Islanders forward Kyle Palmeri, who visited Will’s Smashburgers with his family. Palmeri, a Long Island native, has expressed interest in collaborating through his foundation, which also champions veteran causes. Will feels especially grateful for the freedom enjoyed every day, “It’s because they’re putting their lives on the line that we can have moments like this,” he adds.
Working in the butcher shop, Will doesn’t just flip burgers; he also leaves personal notes in customers’ bags, encouraging them with messages such as “strive to inspire.” He believes that making a positive impact is more important than profit or fame. “It’s about doing the right thing and never taking shortcuts,” he states.
The young entrepreneur’s journey began last winter during a fundraising dinner at his high school in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he raised $1,500 for the Gary Sinise Foundation, a nonprofit supporting veterans. Will donates 10% of his profits to this cause, a gesture showcasing his commitment to giving back to those who have served.
Having grown up in a culinary family, Will developed a passion for cooking at an early age. He fondly recalls assisting his dad with barbecuing and experimenting with flavors. His love for food is clear as he describes how he prepares his smashburgers to perfection, ensuring every bite is flavorful.
To enhance the experience for his customers, he has set up picnic tables outside Center Cuts, allowing them to enjoy their meals in a pleasant outdoor setting. As he engages with the community, Will has become a familiar face, known by name to many of his patrons. Friends even spread the word about his stand, helping him grow his customer base.
Will’s impactful experiences at Camp Spartan in Vermont motivated him not just to create a business, but also to pursue a future in the military. He plans to join an ROTC program in college, aiming for a career in the Army. Until then, he’s focused on mastering the art of making what he describes as the best smashburger on the North Fork.
His “Green Beret” special, featuring a full-sized smashburger topped with lobster and warm butter, is especially popular among adventurous eaters. “We put lobster on it because no one told us not to,” he jokes, showcasing his creativity in the kitchen.
As Will’s Smashburgers gains traction, the community’s support continues to grow. He has organized events at local venues, such as the Barnyard in Hampton Bays, and has plans for more, including an upcoming event at Macari Vineyard. With increasing interest in his burgers, it’s clear that Will is not just building a business; he’s fostering a sense of community, gratitude, and respect for those who serve.
In expressing his appreciation for veterans, Will emphasizes, “I’m grateful for this country. We live in the greatest country on the planet.” Through his entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to honor those who sacrifice for our freedom, Will Burrell is making a difference, one delicious burger at a time.
