Big Box Office Weekend for “Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible”
This Memorial Day weekend saw a remarkable box office performance, led by Disney’s live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch,” which grossed an impressive $145.5 million in North American theaters. This makes it the second-largest domestic opening of the year, right behind “A Minecraft Movie.”
The film stays true to the 2002 original, showcasing the adventure of a six-legged alien and a Hawaiian girl, a storyline that has garnered a loyal fan base over the years.
In a close second, Paramount Pictures’ “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” brought in a franchise record of $63 million. This installment marks Tom Cruise’s eighth appearance as the iconic character Ethan Hunt, likely concluding his nearly 30-year tenure in this role. Though it didn’t match “Lilo & Stitch” in domestic earnings, it did achieve significant success by surpassing the opening of “Mission: Impossible: Fallout,” which earned $61 million back in 2018.
Globally, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” stood out as the top earner of the weekend, bringing in a total of $127 million, while “Lilo & Stitch” followed closely with $111 million.
In comparison, the previous installment, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” debuted with a franchise-best of $80 million over its opening weekend in July, albeit falling short of industry expectations with a $56.2 million opening over three days.
With such strong performances from both films, the box office is showing a promising rebound as audiences continue to flock to theaters for entertainment.
