In a remarkable incident, two men from New York found themselves in a life-threatening situation while hiking Torreys Peak in Colorado. They were airlifted to safety under what is thought to be the highest-altitude helicopter rescue ever in the state’s history.
The men, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, made a call for help around 5 p.m. last Thursday after veering off the intended path on their climb of Torreys Peak, which rises to 14,300 feet. This peak is one of the tallest in Colorado and attracts many adventurous hikers.
According to Jack Smith, a spokesperson for the Alpine Rescue Team, it seemed as though the men may not have had extensive hiking experience. They had decided to tackle the peak during a road trip through the state.
“It appeared there was a significant lack of awareness about the risks involved,” Smith observed, reflecting a common concern among outdoor enthusiasts about the importance of preparation.
Tragically, while emergency crews were guiding the hikers back on track, both were struck by lightning just moments later. This left one of the men unresponsive and in critical condition.
Approximately 30 rescuers quickly mobilized, ascending the mountain to assist, as a Colorado National Guard Black Hawk helicopter was deployed to lift the injured man from 14,200 feet. He was subsequently taken to a burn unit at a Denver hospital, where he is reported to be in fair condition.
After this challenging operation, the helicopter returned around midnight to safely extract the other injured individual, who received treatment and was later released from a nearby hospital.
This daring rescue likely set a new state record, surpassing the previous high of 13,700 feet. Mountain rescues are inherently complex due to the reduced air pressure at higher elevations, which can significantly limit a helicopter’s ability to lift heavy loads.
The operational ceiling of the Black Hawk is about 19,000 feet, making it a versatile tool in challenging rescues like this one.
As the 11th highest summit in Colorado, Torreys Peak presents both a thrilling challenge and, as this incident shows, potential dangers for those who may underestimate the journey. Hiking enthusiasts are encouraged to prepare adequately, understand their limitations, and respect the power of nature.
