Minneapolis Immigration Case Raises Concerns
Minneapolis, Minnesota – A Liberian man, Garrison Gibson, found himself back in custody after a judge previously ordered his release due to the manner of his initial arrest. Federal agents took Gibson into custody at his home without a judicial warrant, leading to questions about proper procedure.
Gibson, who came to the U.S. fleeing conflict as a child, has a past drug conviction, though dismissed, that complicated his immigration status. He was previously under an order of supervision, requiring regular check-ins with immigration officials. After a check-in, agents detained him again.
This incident comes amid increased immigration enforcement in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area by the Department of Homeland Security. These operations have become more active following a recent shooting on January 7.
In light of these events, Native American leaders are advising tribal members to carry identification, raising concerns about potential overreach by immigration enforcement. Some Native American groups have reported increased stops and detentions by ICE agents.
The situation has also sparked political debate, with discussions about federal authority to address unrest related to immigration enforcement.
