The Trump administration is taking measures to ensure that an undocumented immigrant, who was convicted of killing two American teenagers in a DUI crash, does not get released early. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted this situation on “America Reports,” pointing out how it illustrates the failures of the current immigration system.
Leavitt emphasized that President Trump is firm about not tolerating crime committed by illegal immigrants. She stated, “This individual case represents everything that is wrong with our immigration system.” The immigrant in question, Oscar Eduardo Ortega-Anguiano, was found guilty in 2022 of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after causing a crash that resulted in the deaths of 19-year-olds Anya Varfolomeev and Nicholay Osokin. Ortega-Anguiano was sentenced to ten years in prison, but there are plans for his early release, which has caused significant outrage among the victims’ families and immigration officials.
Leavitt assured that the administration is actively working to prevent Ortega-Anguiano’s release. “We will continue to enforce our nation’s immigration laws and ensure that illegal immigrants who commit violent acts against law-abiding citizens face justice,” she said.
An ICE detainer has been issued, indicating that Ortega-Anguiano will be transferred to federal custody before his expected release in July. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office has confirmed that the state will comply with this federal request. Leavitt has warned that if state officials fail to cooperate, the administration is prepared to take further action.
The Department of Justice is also pursuing additional charges against Ortega-Anguiano, aiming to secure a conviction that could lead to a longer sentence. Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed her outrage about the situation, stressing the need for justice for the families of the victims.
Leavitt pointed out that Ortega-Anguiano’s case underscores significant issues within the immigration system, noting that he had been deported twice before entering the country illegally again. She criticized both the previous administration for allowing his return and the recent court rulings that hinder deportation efforts, saying, “This individual was twice deported but was allowed back into our country.”
Continuing her remarks, Leavitt condemned Democratic lawmakers who have visited deported individuals, including a suspected gang member, in El Salvador. She asserted that these actions betray their responsibility to represent law-abiding citizens.
Despite facing challenges in the legal and political arenas, Leavitt made it clear that the Trump administration remains committed to its immigration enforcement priorities. She concluded by saying, “The president is dedicated to securing our homeland and will continue to fight for American citizens.”
