STOCKHOLM – The Nobel Prize in literature was awarded to Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, known for his long, thoughtful books. The Nobel committee praised his work for showing the strength of art, even when things seem bad.
Krasznahorkai’s stories often explore important ideas about life and society. Some of his famous books, like “Satantango,” have even been made into movies.
The judges said Krasznahorkai sees the world clearly and believes in the power of art. They compared him to other great writers who use humor and strange situations to tell their stories.
Krasznahorkai, who is 71 years old, has also written books inspired by his trips to China and Japan. The Nobel committee said he has been writing excellent books for almost 50 years.
While Krasznahorkai has been critical of some government leaders, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Orbán congratulated him on winning the prize, calling him a pride of Hungary.
Krasznahorkai has won many awards for his writing, including the Man Booker International Prize. People have praised his unique writing style and the way he makes readers feel like they are part of his stories.
He is the first winner from Hungary in many years, joining a list of famous writers who have also won the Nobel Prize.
The Nobel Prize is given out each year on December 10, the day Alfred Nobel died. Nobel was a Swedish businessman who invented dynamite and created the prizes. The winners receive money, a gold medal, and a diploma.
