Recent comments made by actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck about “cancel culture” have sparked debate, reigniting a past disagreement with Amanda Knox.
Damon and Affleck discussed the potential excesses of cancel culture, with Damon suggesting that some public figures might prefer a jail sentence to the constant public shaming that comes with being “canceled.” He argued that the repercussions of public condemnation can be unending.
Knox, who was previously critical of Damon for his role in the 2021 film “Stillwater”—a movie loosely based on her own experiences—responded to Damon’s remarks on social media. She referenced an article about his comments, implying that Damon should have consulted her before speaking publicly on the topic.
Knox spent four years in an Italian prison after being wrongly convicted, and later acquitted, of the murder of her roommate.
This isn’t the first time Knox has spoken out against Damon. She previously criticized “Stillwater” for what she perceived as profiting from her wrongful conviction and for potentially influencing public opinion against her. She argued that the film, while fictionalized, still closely mirrored her case, blurring the lines between reality and fiction in a way that could have lasting consequences for her public image.
Knox has since become an advocate for criminal justice reform.
